ABOUT/MEANING: “Ring,” whose Japanese title Kimi Janai Dareka no Aishikata (君じゃない誰かの愛し方) means “How to Love Someone Who Isn’t You,” captures the difficulty of moving on from someone who still feels irreplaceable. After their final kiss, the relationship has ended, yet the narrator continues searching for traces of this person everywhere he looks. He knows they may eventually love somebody else, but emotionally he cannot accept it or understand how he is supposed to do the same.
Looking back, he also recognises the distance that had developed between them. They tried to respect each other’s individual ways and avoid colliding, while keeping uncomfortable truths deliberately vague. Beneath those compromises was something the narrator was afraid to confront: perhaps they simply did not fit. Their separation therefore carries both heartbreak and reluctant self-awareness.
The ring becomes a recurring image through which he remembers what was lost. A circle made with his own fingers brings the other person's smile back into view, while the actual ring they remove after their final kiss marks the reality of their separation. Although he hopes their goodbye might allow him to become someone different from who he was yesterday, his heart has not yet caught up. He understands that he must move forward, but still does not know how to love someone who isn't “you.”
