ABOUT/MEANING: "Cat & Dog” captures the playful, all-consuming intensity of young infatuation through the unusual metaphor of wanting to become someone’s pet. The boy longs to remain constantly beside “you,” receive their affection and have a relationship as close and uncomplicated as the bond between a pet and its owner. The exaggerated animal imagery gives these feelings a humorous, youthful quality, while expressing a recognisable form of “puppy love”: liking someone so much that simply being near them feels exciting and being apart feels almost unbearable.
Within The Dream Chapter: STAR, the song explores another side of the connection at the heart of the album. Where “Blue Orangeade” celebrates compatibility through difference and “CROWN” finds acceptance in another person, “Cat & Dog” focuses on the attachment that can develop once someone becomes important to you. WORDPLAY/TRANSLATION NOTE: The Korean lyric 우연 아닌 묘연 (uyeon anin myoyeon) plays on the similar sounds of 우연 (uyeon, “coincidence”) and 묘연 (myoyeon). The syllable 묘 (myo) is also the Sino-Korean reading of the Chinese character 猫, meaning “cat,” allowing the lyric to turn 묘연 into a playful cat-related counterpart to “coincidence.”
