ABOUT/MEANING: “Setsuna Hanabi” (セツナハナビ) uses the fleeting beauty of summer fireworks as a metaphor for a relationship approaching an unavoidable end. Like fireworks that shine brilliantly before disappearing almost as soon as they appear, the time shared between two people feels precious precisely because they know it cannot last.
Even while recognising that separation is coming, the narrator cannot stop wishing for more time together. Memories of their brief summer love remain vivid, making it difficult to simply accept that something so beautiful must disappear. “Setsuna Hanabi” therefore captures the bittersweet tension between knowing an ending cannot be prevented and still wanting to hold onto the person - and the moment - for just a little longer.
CONTEXT: The title combines setsuna (刹那), meaning a fleeting instant or moment, with hanabi (花火), meaning “fireworks.” These words reinforce the song’s central image: fireworks are beautiful because they illuminate the night intensely but only briefly. The title therefore reflects both the brilliance and impermanence of the relationship, preserving it like a vivid flash of light even as it disappears.
LYRICS - ENGLISH TRANSLATION
When a fleeting firework bursts
It’s destined to fade away, just like you and me
A summer love, oh I, oh I
Fleeting firework, stay
The scorching heat of summer
Is just like the way we love each other
Waiting for something to ignite at any moment
Counting down the time we have left
How many, how many, how many times are left?
Together on this final night
We look up at the fireworks as they bloom and fade
Even though I know it can’t be, I still pray to the night sky
Don’t let me, don’t let me go, please
When a fleeting firework bursts
It’s destined to fade away, just like you and me
A summer love, oh I, oh I
Fleeting firework, stay
We can’t go back
To who we were that day
Fleeting firework, stay
There’s no spark that can ignite our rain-soaked hearts
A regret I can’t erase, over, over, over now
“Please don’t leave”
It’s already too late
How many, how many, how many times are left?
The peak has already passed
By the time I realise it, we’re already nearing the end
I find myself replaying a scene I’ll never forget
Don’t let me, don’t let me go, please
When a fleeting firework bursts
It’s destined to fade away, just like you and me
A summer love, oh I, oh I
Fleeting firework, stay
We can’t go back
To who we were that day
Fleeting firework, stay
