ABOUT/MEANING: “Step by Step” embraces the uncertainty and instability of moving through life without having everything figured out. The narrator feels incomplete and restless, searching for where he belongs while his path refuses to unfold neatly. There may be no correct answer and no guarantee that things will go as imagined, but rather than waiting to become perfectly certain, the song encourages stepping into the unknown and doing what feels true to you.
That uncertainty gradually becomes something to embrace rather than escape. The repeated “step by step by me / step by step by you” accepts both the wonderful days and the unfamiliar present as parts of the journey worth loving. Even when two people feel out of step, they can keep reaching for one another, dancing, moving forward and taking another step together. Progress does not require being complete - sometimes it simply means choosing to experience whatever comes next.
CONTEXT: Written and composed by Japanese singer-songwriter Eve, “Step by Step” was created as the theme song for Fuji TV’s Saturday morning programme Mezamashi Doyōbi. Eve explained that he hoped to create a song that would help people comfortably begin a new day, while TXT described the upbeat track as something they hoped would give listeners strength and help them start their weekend feeling good.
LYRICS (ENGLISH TRANSLATION - @translatingTXT)
Do what you wanna do
Jumping into a new world
Do what you wanna do
The stupid things too
I just wanna snooze them away
Always ready
I don't know, this hyper-realistic world
A memory of some time
In the prison of dreams
Melts into sweet memories, dawn
Yesterday was a starry night
Not joking, it's still not enough
Don't want to regret
I'll imagine away
But still, unstable dynamite
Wandering around, entangled in time
Inexperienced storyline
Incomplete rendezvous
But our paths just won't cross
Like I'm swaying back and forth, I can't stop
Let me dance with you again
Do what you wanna do
Jumping into a new world
If it's us
Do what you wanna do
The stupid things too
I just wanna snooze them away
Step by step by me
Step by step by you
Step by step - both the wonderful days
Step by step by me
Step by step - and the unknown today
I wanna love them all
A bad boy searching for something he lacks
Just a fairytale-like movie
Gonna sail away, through the brain
Your voice flows along this vibe that's groovy
Humming melody
Let's meet each other eye to eye, follow me
Jump on this beat, let your heart dance
No stopping, only moving forward
Feelings with no deceit
The early bird gets the worm in this world
Where we have to search for where we belong
Always raw, even if incomplete
Answering the cheers
You can fake it 'til you make it, unstable
Let's make them distinctly, our unread messages
There's no correct answer
I won't expect anything anymore
Despite it all, take another step with you
Take another step with you
But our paths just won't cross
Like I'm swaying back and forth, I can't stop
Let me dance with you again
Do what you wanna do
Jumping into a new world
If it's us
Do what you wanna do
The stupid things too
I just wanna snooze them away
Step by step by me
Step by step by you
Step by step - both the wonderful days
Step by step by me
Step by step - and the unknown today
I wanna love them all
